Our recent study into the use of the private sector to deliver NHS funded eye care found that £536 million was paid by the NHS in England to 5 companies in one year.
Most of this money was paid to these companies for delivering cataract operations to NHS patients.
Out of this an estimated £169 million leaked out in the form of profits.
This £169 million did not go towards treating NHS patients.
We also found that out of the money paid to these companies in one year, £68 million was used to pay interest on high cost loans.
Again, this £68 million did not go towards treating NHS patients.
